Chocolates and cupcakes! My two most favourite things in this whole wide world! Don’t we all love them! Chocolate cravings are to that extent that in the middle of the night you want to get up and go grab some of them from the fridge and binge on them! I am sure right now you want to eat your favourite chocolate because the word itself is making you crave for it.
Did you wonder how these chocolate cravings can lead you to a serious addiction to chocolates and sugar, which eventually can be fatal for your health even without your realising it.
In this article, we will talk about how to control the chocolate cravings and make conscious decisions to lead a healthy life.
This is not a bible to stop cravings, but these are tips you will want to remember and want to work on.
Tips and Tricks
1Give in to the cravings but take in moderately
Easier said than done. You cannot give up on the cravings overnight! It is a process and it takes time. It is with reference to any addiction over good and bad things.
Now that you have taken a conscious decision to cut down on the chocolate intake, you will have to learn to give in moderately.
You can involve in chocolates once in a while, as long as this period doesn’t occur very often and the cravings are not very intense, you can indulge yourself in some chocolate in very moderate quantities.
2Craving is not about what is lacking
Your craving does not signify a lack or deficiency that your body is suffering. Do no fall prey to the idea of binging on chocolates to overcome some deficiency that you possibly think you have.
Understand the need and the health benefits of the food that you are eating and consume chocolates in moderate amounts. You might not tend to put on weight or see any immediate effects in your body with the consumption of chocolates. However constant chocolate cravings and consumption of chocolates will cause lag effects to the body.
3Plan for snacks to avoid chocolate cravings
People tend to use low blood sugar as an excuse for a mid-afternoon chocolate snack. However, there are sufficient alternative foods that can boost the blood sugar and energy levels.
For instance, a peanut butter sandwich or a banana is much better, as it increases blood sugar gradually, rather than the quick fix hit of chocolate.
You need to cultivate efforts to learn the triggers for this weakness of snacks and consume healthy alternatives, such as nuts or fruit.
One healthy alternative is to get the chocolate fix with a low-calorie hot drink.
The idea of exercise may not be as satisfying as munching on a bar of chocolate, especially if you want to see the instant satisfaction of urging the craving.
However, exercise creates serotonin, a neurotransmitter which promotes feelings of happiness. It also releases endorphins in the same way that a bar of chocolate will, the only exercise is far better for you in the long run.
Once you start with the habit of regular workouts, you will not experience as much need for sugar.
5Understand the triggers and work on them
If you are experiencing regular chocolate cravings, you will have to concentrate to understand the triggers for these cravings. Identify the pattern and the triggers that cause these cravings, and work on them, and also, identify the time around or situation around in which the cravings for chocolates emerge in a compelling manner.
There can be multiple options that you can avail to get rid of these cravings, however once you identify the triggers it will become easier for you to cut down on these cravings.
Apply healthy alternatives every time you face a trigger to avoid over indulging in these chocolate temptations.
6Limit the damage
We are all humans, and here and there are fair chances that you might over indulge while giving in to these temptations of chocolates.
In such case, you will now need to limit the damage caused by this over indulgence.
A good habit is to avoid the temptations for the next few days, so as to compensate for the damage caused due to the over indulgence.
One habit you and anybody can develop is not to buy a large quantum and keep it in the fridge as ready made stock. A heavy stock is a culprit to tempt you more.
7When indulging in chocolates prefer dark
It is important that you choose your chocolate with care.
A better option would be to consume dark chocolates as they have low sugar content and contains more antioxidants. Choosing chocolate with nuts is a smart choice since it has more protein, leaving you feeling more satisfied.
Limiting the consumption to a few squares of dark chocolate rather than a whole bar of creamy milk will help you cut calories too.
However, it is important to keep in mind that dark chocolate contains lots of fat and calories.
8Choose quality over quantity
If you need a sugar splurge, pick a decadent sugary food, however, keep it small. For example, choose a perfect dark chocolate truffle instead of a king-sized candy bar, and savour it slowly. Eating in haste will make you come back for greater portions. Learn to incorporate small amounts in the diet but concentrate on filling your stomach with less sugary and healthier options.
